Active Grille Shutter (code U0284)

My precious car hasn't even hit 6k miles yet and I have a freaking check engine light ? I'm getting flashbacks to my old 08 legacy... But anyways, from the beginning:

The first day we had warm weather in Wisconsin (above 60) I was heading out, but I had let my car idle a bit while setting up my music, etc. After a few minutes of idling the check engine light came on. I checked the code at home (U0284-active grille shutters) and after restarting my car a few times to see if they were opening (they were) the light went off. Same trip, maybe 5 minutes after I left, stopped at a red light and the CE comes on again! Quickly restart the car before the light changes and it's magically gone.

Then, two weeks later when it's hot again, I leave my car in a parking lot (it's about 80 outside) and when I return after an hour, the CE light reappears upon start immediately. I was only about 5 minutes from the dealership, so I drove right there before it could go off. They confirmed it as an issue with the active grille shutters and said they will order the parts, all covered by warranty, and they claim the car is safe to drive. I should hear from them 4-5 days from then.

Now, I'm lost on a couple things here. I don't know exactly what causes this error since the shutters are opening/closing when I turn the car on/off.

Also, it's been almost two weeks since I brought my car in and apparently the wire harness is on backorder? So can I assume others are having this problem?

Finally, they said my car was okay to drive, but I've been noticing changes especially driving when it's warmer. It seems to have a harder time staying at a constant speed, and when shifting up it seems to be kind of delayed while shifting down seems early. I've also noticed some times when I try to accelerate and the car almost stutters for a moment before speeding up, but this isn't always at a gear change. Another thing, possibly unrelated, I heard this awful noise coming from behind the radio a few days ago. It started as soon as I started to brake for a light. I thought it was the head unit since I've read about them acting out but when I turned off my music and the screen it continued for a bit. It wasn't until I let off the brake for a second that it actually stopped.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I just did some more research... the GEN5 Impreza does indeed have "active grille shutter" on the lower half of the grille. (below the bumper)

Direct from the Subaru website ==> At low speeds, this shutter is open for extra engine cooling. But at highway speeds, it closes, reducing aerodynamic drag and helping to increase highway fuel efficiency.

Here is excerpt from the factory service manual ==> Subaru Legacy Service Manual - Dtc u0284 lost communication with active grille shutter module "a" - Diagnostic procedure with diagnostic trouble code (dtc)

Essentually, the U0284 is saying that the computer cannot determine the position of the shutter. (NOT that the shutter is disfunctional)

All I can say is that $hit happens and the dealer and Subaru will take care of your car. No matter what brand car you buy...they are made by humans and nothing is infailable. Don't let it get you down...this is a simple think to fix and it's fully covered.

Get down on your hands and knees with a flash light and look. I’m pretty sure you have something stuck in it. When you first start the car it cycles so the system knows what position its in. Most likely you got some road debris in there. We get stray bolts or dropped parts stuck in them in the plant sometimes so it’s not unheard of!

Just had this issue.... Started the car in the morning and CE light was on. Warnings that all the Eyesight was inactive and to check the manual. Manual, of coarse, said take it in. Weird the the eyesight was effected by the grill shutters.

Diagnosed with the U0284 Grill shutter. Service rep said the wires to the unit were corroded to failure so they replaced them.

Rather disappointing that I didn't even make it through one winter..... what is going to happen next year if/when it happens again and i don't have warranty??

Canadian road salt and whatever that liquid they spray really is not helping the environment.... they use so much, it can't be good.

Do you know which connector? The sensor or motor connector?

Went to the dealer this morning, after two CE light in less than a week for the same reason (active grille shutter). They told me the harness gets faulty usually after a harsh winter. Apparently it's a design flaw, and they are aware of it. The replacement part is supposed to be improved and it should last, but it is in backorder so I'll get it next week.
I have 3 and a half years of full warranty left, so it's a subaru canada's problem for now :)

besides this minor annoyance, the car rocks (impreza sport-tech+eyesight)

cheers!

This trouble code just popped up in my 2017 Impreza Sport wagon yesterday. I also lost cruise control functionality at the same time, which I use every single day on my 90 mile daily commute. I couldn't care less about having active grill shutters, but I absolutely must have cruise control. I must say, I am extremely disappointed in Subaru for these kinds of negligent design flaws. Lord knows how much the dealer service dept will extort from me for this one.

Have you tried looking for debris that might be restricting the rotation of the shutters? I removed mine and couldn't get rid of the code or figure out how to bypass it, but when I reinstalled it the code remained. The issue was that the shutters were in the wrong position when starting the car, so I needed to unplug the shutters again, rotate them fully to the other position and then plug them back in. Solve the issue, cleared the code and haven't had a problem.
Even if you haven't unplugged yours they are pretty sensitive and the car needs to know weather the shutters are in the fully open or fully closed position.
It is possible that if some debris got lodged in the shutters when they were open the shaft that goes into the motor that rotates them may have skipped a tooth as it is made of nylon. If this happened then the shutters might not be fully in the correct position.
This is a wild guess, but knowing how sensitive that sensor is maybe it's possible????
Watch the shutters open and close while someone else starts the car and see if they move correctly.
