After some research I've landed on the Subaru Impreza Sedan 2021 Limited. My lease ends in February on my Ford Fusion and I’m ready to buy a car. Unfortunately there aren’t many Impreza 2021 Limited Sedans in Ocean Blue Pearl in California. The internet dealer I’m working with says he could order me one custom no deposit down and if I don’t like it I can walk away from it.

The questions I have for the group are:
  • What negotiation power do I have with a custom Subaru?
  • How much negotiating can I do with an internet salesperson?
  • How do I negotiate getting the extras like all weather mats, rims, etc thrown in for free?
  • I plan on giving a down payment
  • My parents are planning on buying the exact car as well at the same time
Any help would be much appreciated :)

That's your best leverage to work with. You can mention if the deal and add ins are good enough, you'll be buying two of them. Should get their attention and some good customer service at that point.

Or get the best price and options you can for one, then bring it up and ask how much better than can do if you buy 2?

That’s pretty cool, just sent you a direct message to check it out when you get a chance.

Had the same issue when I got my 19 Limited 5dr in Island Blue Pearl without any additional packages (I didn't want the moonroof since they all leak eventually). Very few Limited Island Blue Pearls in California, and those that were here all had the additional tech packages. Local dealer told me that there were only a few slated to come into the state upon the next shipment, and of those, they didn't know what the trim line would be or the packages installed.

Having the custom order would have taken approximately the same amount of time (~3 months), but guaranteed that the car you wanted would arrive. There was a deposit required for us to put in the order, but it was fully refundable at any point and we were not obligated to purchase the car upon arrival. Plus it would also ensure that the car you were getting had no test drives or anything with it beyond the 7-8mi they all seem to come with.

I got 4k off MSRP with mine, here's how I did it:

Signed up for newsletters before memorial day with all local dealers. They sent me the memorial day ad. One ad said $3.5k off MSRP for impreza and another said $7k off MSRP outback (wew). Went to a closest dealer to get the price match for the car I wanted, tried to see if they could beat that price, they wouldn't budge. Called Oakland, explained position and they agreed beat it by $500 if I come now, so I went and got an Impreza 2019 with fog lights and with eyesight for $18.5.

Did not buy any warranty, car doesn't cost much to begin with it doesn't make sense to spend a few thousand on a warranty. Doing all my own service. Costs <$20 and takes 5 mins for an oil change.

So the advice is to buy during sale seasons, compare ads, make the dealerships try to beat each other in pricing, and don't buy any extras you can just buy them on ebay. If I was in your shoes I'd buy a bucket to last until the next sales time, then buy the car I want and craigslist the bucket.

That works for cars on the lot, not something that no one has and is special order.

Just pretend like some of the options you want are a stretch money wise and it's likely that they'll work with you a little bit, or if you're willing to settle for one that's not exactly the spec you would take I bet you they would give you a great deal for something on the lot so they can sell you one now and get that sale before you walk out instead of waiting three months for your custom spec.
Never be honest with someone trying to sell you a car. They have to call your bluff. Pretend like you're going to cross the street to the Mazda dealer or something.;)

Day late dollar short, but. . . I just got a new Subaru for 2500 under the invoice of 30k, and they gave me 19,700 in trade for our 2018 Subaru. Deals can be had, you just have to be good at getting them.

Update. I finally bought an Impreza. I almost went with a custom 2021 sedan limited but at the last minute a 2018 Impreza Limited with low miles and no recalls popped up. I'm super happy with the purchase. Picture and video to come soon. I'm thinking of starting a YouTube channel dedicated to the Impreza.
