The new 2017 Impreza is going to have Subaru's new-generation Boxer engine, an engine that's 50 years old. They celebrated the milestone by showing off the 2017 Impreza alongside a classic Subaru 1000 at the 2016 Automobile Council show. Just found the history of their engine interesting.

That's a really cool video going through the years. The heart was always pretty much the same, just fine tuning and adjustments to be made to modernize.

Interesting to note that one of the reasons Subaru stuck with the boxer engine is because of it's low center of gravity and stability with low vibrations.

Apparently there's a longer version. If boxer engines are so great, why won't the other automakers use them in their models?

The inline engines are able to have a lower hoodline and are easier to produce. Boxer engines are apparently noisier than the latter two. The boxer engines take up more space than the other two as well. Maintenance can be a pain depending on the job for boxer engines as well.
