Discussion Starter #1
Hi everyone, I'd like to open up a discussion for those who have base model sedans who are also on the same page as me. I am looking for inexpensive alternatives for roof attachments whether it be crossbars or roof rails. That means my car has nothing above but those mounting points. I've seen the oem crossbar which is around $170 however it looks to high to my liking. I'm looking forward to getting a cargo rack with it so I'd want to know if anyone here has any lowkey cheaper and reliable options they would wanna share. My budget for the rails/crossbars alone is maybe $250-$300 tops. I want to have a lower profile than oem, similar to yakima or thule, though not the pricetag.... Someone educate me!

Not necessarily inexpensive, but within the range you note:
Scroll down for “performance rally roof rails”
Rails only @229$usd. With shipping just under 270.
I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but likely will as I dig the look a little better than the oem fixed crossbars

Your best bet would be to find a set of used Yakima or Thule towers and bars on craigslist, OfferUp, or Facebook Marketplace. You should be able to find them within that budget. I use a set of older Yakima control towers with round bars. Yakima's site doesn't list the control towers as compatible, but they are. I think it's mainly because they Yakima longer makes the control towers and wants people to buy the skyline towers instead.

I stumbled across the SSD products while searching for the same thing (roof rails) on reddit. I too have the base model and with camping season around the corner, I'd like something a little more sturdy than just the crossbars. Plus, I think the rails look very stylish, and they come in black!

Also during the summer my wife and kiddo love the beach. I fully intend on using my old surf rack, which I'd prefer to mount to aftermarket rails. They wouldn't fit the Subaru bars, and honestly the ones offered from Subaru just aren't attractive.

Lastly, getting the rails means that I don't have to mount and un mount the crossbars to the frame every time I use them, because I'm not the kind of person that wants those things giving me drag. No, I'm not racing my Impreza, but I do like when I can't hear extra wind while cruising down the highway.

Anywhoo, I'm purchasing the SSD rails with my next paycheck, so I'll happily post pics once they're installed!

Be aware, as an owner of the ssd rails you'll have to find custom or fitted bars and they get pricy too. I nodded up a set of van ones for under $100

thats a good tip. Any insights into models that fit (or are close to fitting?). I’m pretty dead set on the SSD rails

my old surf rack was a mod I did from a set that also came off a van xD funny that you found the same to be useful

As a new owner, I have to ask what makes Thule or Yak worth 3x the price?

Don't get me wrong, had them in the past, but just cant see what they offer at ~600 vs the stock ones for $153?

Negative, Yak Timberline towers are what I used for my SSD rails along with 50" Yak cross bars. Good racks arent cheap so to speak. I dont want to worry about a 2-3k bike falling off a cheap wrack. Its like buying the cheapest helmet just because its a helmet and must be as good as the ones for more money<g>. With the exception of the rails, the rest of the parts can then be transferred to your next project.
