In case anyone is planning on installing the premium trim oem roof rails on a base model, I will share my recent experience:

1.) you will have to remove and cut the rain gutter trim. On the passenger side, pry up the rear and with a long flathead screwdriver, push each clip forward off of its retaining stud. On the driver's side, start at the front and push each clip towards the back. If you pry up instead of pushing laterally, they will definitely break. Each trim piece will have to be cut into 3 smaller sections that you can measure by test fitting the rails. Alternatively, you can buy the crosstrek trim pieces, but cutting my originals worked fine.

2.) you will have to drill 2 holes on each side. 8 of the 12 holes are already drilled to hold the existing cross bar brackets, but the back 2 on each side need to be drilled. Put some nail polish on the tip of the rear 2 rail studs and then test fit into the existing holes to leave a mark where to drill.

3.) You will have to pull out the rear, middle, and front pillar trim, remove the sun visors, as well as the oh sht grips (press the upper tab while pulling the small cover straight out. do this for each retainer and they slide out - no prying like on 90's ones). This will allow you to pull down both sides of the headliner and expose the nuts holding the cross bar brackets (same holes for installing the rails). If you dont have an angled socket adapter, you will probably need to go further and remove the entire headliner. The nuts are all 10mm heads.

4.) slather all around the holes with silicon sealant to that they dont leak. Press the roof trim into place before installing the rails. put everything back together inside the car.

I didnt expect it to be this difficult, but its doable. Also, the holes that need to be drilled are nowhere near the side curtain airbags, so you dont have to worry about accidentally piercing them. Hope this helps someone, sorry that I didnt take pictures.

Where did you get the rails from??? I’ve been looking for them for a while!
I got them used from an ebay part out seller for 230 shipped, because I was too excited to wait for a better deal. I got the silver painted impreza ones, but I bet the black ones on crosstreks fit exactly the same, and probably easier to find.

I got the cheapest set of 40 dollar ebay universal aluminum crossbars that match the silver and black rails nicely. I was impressed with the quality for the price, though I did have to take a file to one of the adjuster rods to make it work. The whole setup has handled 2 kayaks at highway speeds very securely a few times so far.

Good information above. For additional future info the ssd rails don't need internal cabin modification. They use the 2 holes already on the roof so a bit easier but certainly not oem... The clips did not survive but I don't ancicipate taking the rails off (loctite)

I have a third gen 2011 and I'm trying to find one that fits the roof. There's some on amazon for 4th and 5th gen. Would you happen to know if these were made for 3rd gen?

I just 8-minute bolt on Thule side bars when I need them, then take 'em off when the surfing season is over. Easy peasy, and no change to my base Impreza. And no roof rack noise when they're off.

Hey - I have a 2018 Sport Hatch with no rails and want to add a set but want the front/back type. Other than the SSD brand, are you aware of any others? Thanks 🙏

OEM is the one done on this thread- but requires a significant set of modifications done to your rain rails vs. stock. I use the official aero crossbars on my Sport.

I am investigating into installing roof rails onto my Sport model. I am curious how the rear mounts worked. Were there threaded holes in the roof, or did you seat the bolt into the rail from underneath the roof? Did the rear portion of the rail fit neatly into the rain gutter? Also, how has it held up? Does it feel sturdy?
