I was just curious about peoples thoughts regarding alloy wheels.

From what I understand, they are lighter and can provide a bit better gas mileage than steel wheels, but are also a bit "fragile" and susceptible to scuffs and breaks. One article mentioned that the right pothole can do them in. I live in Iowa so potholes are pretty common come springtime.

I'm waiting on my Impreza order within the next couple months, and this will be my first vehicle with alloy wheels. Just wondering what I else I should expect. Thanks.

I replaced the base model steel wheels with aluminum wheels. I weighed both. Steel were 18lbs per wheel. The aluminum wheels I bought were also 18lbs per wheel. Lighter (and heavier) are available though.

Fragile wouldn't be the word for them but you do have to be mindful. They scuff just as easily as steel wheels would, but at least they do have a protective clear coat over them. Potholes are something you'll have to learn how to avoid (responsibly) and you'll be fine.
