Hello I’m pretty new to the forums... I have a quick question about updating my head unit... I asked if there were an update at my dealership and they told me there is, but because I’m past the 36k warranty I would have to pay $100 to get it updated. I was fuming so I spoke to the manager and he finally caved in, but said he would not do it again. I don’t see how that’s fair or right just for a stupid software update because I don’t have the navigation. Did anyone else run into this problem? I have a 17 sport with 50k miles.

You may need to contact SOA next time as that is pretty shitty service from your dealer. You would think they'd like to keep you happy so you keep coming back. Some people have never been taught what customer service should truly be which is a real shame.

All they have to do is plug in a flash drive and click UPDATE and the car does everything else. Not like it's a major issue for the dealer. It can be done in the parking lot and doesn't need to be in a bay taking up valuable space.

That seems odd that the dealer wouldn’t update the headunit. I’ve had dealers update the ECU well past the warranty even when I bought the car in for other service and didn’t even know there was an update. This was non-recall stuff, just TSB, so they really didn’t have to do it. Subaru needs to start having over the air updates since the headunit appears to support it.

That happens a lot when its emissions related as that warranty is longer than your bumper to bumper in most cases.

Harmon Kardon is more at fault as they have to pay for these updates to the dealers(my understanding) If they didnt make a shitty radio it would be less an issue but....

That said when I got my oil changed Saturday I was told the newest update for the radio was also a recall. It might not address what my issue was but some screen issues where they are going black and not able to get back the functionality. I think I was told it was temperature related. They cant get enough radios now to replace the ones that failed.

The "recall" is just an update to the latest firmware. What version did you get?

Reasonable firmware

Perhaps, with the next release, the radio will stay off... :D
This is important for the following reason: Often, the radio (or whatever else one was playing) comes on before the head unit has fully booted, & during that time, one can often not mute or adjust the volume. It's annoying to not be able to turn the volume down or mute the audio for about ten seconds until the head unit has booted.

I think Subaru wanted to avoid complaints (from impatient teenagers) about the radio/audio not being available for a few seconds after starting, but it would be really nice if Subaru offered a user setting for when the head unit boots:
  1. Start up with the radio/audio on (the present situation).
  2. Start up with the radio/audio (including mute) in the same state as when the head unit was powered off.
  3. Start up with the radio/off.

Silence is golden

Was in about 2 weeks ago and had the update done on mine. If I turn the radio off before I get out of the car it is off when I start my car the next time
I'd like to know how to turn the radio OFF & keep the head unit display ON. Muting isn't OFF, because when you next start the car, you're unmuted. Yes, I can turn the volume down, but that seems to affect all audio (eg, the phone or AA navigation), so I leave it up.

There's more to using the head unit than having audio blaring at you. Subaru & Harman Kardon don't seem to understand that.

There's a separate volume setting for AA and phone. If you adjust volume while using those, you'll see a different volume setting on the display.

The only way to have the radio stay off (and be able to use other features of the HU) is to get in the habit of turning the volume down. One press is just a pause and the extended press (3 secs) shuts off the display but it will come back on, along with the radio, if you make a phone call or whatever.

There was a "fix" in the July 2018 firmware update to keep the system off if it was completely turned off but IMHO that's a useless feature because then you can't do anything else with it. I don't understand why this hasn't been addressed after almost three years and numerous updates - every other car I've owned would leave the radio in the state it was in when the car was turned off.

Edit: there's also a volume mixer you can access by holding down the right button. The left knob will only change the nav volume if you turn it while the nav is making an announcement.
